Background
The protein produced by this gene is part of the MAP kinase family. MAP kinases serve as hubs for various biochemical signals and are implicated in diverse cellular functions such as proliferation, differentiation, transcription regulation, and development. This kinase is activated by environmental stresses and proinflammatory cytokines. Activation involves phosphorylation by MAP kinase kinases (MKKs) or autophosphorylation triggered by interaction with MAP3K7IP1/TAB1 protein. Its substrates include transcription regulators ATF2, MEF2C, and MAX, cell cycle regulator CDC25B, and tumor suppressor p53, indicating its involvement in stress-related transcription, cell cycle regulation, and genotoxic stress response. This gene has four alternatively spliced transcript variants, each encoding distinct isoforms.
